09 March 2016: Loch Avon basin gully skiing Skiing Winter 2016

It was a very murky start to the day, but faith was had in the forecast.  Glimpses of sunshine as we headed up the Fiacaill a' Choire Chais and then down the gentle cruise into Coire Raibert reassured us that it was probably going to be OK.  It was.  Despite Diagonal Gully looking in superb condition, Y Gully was chosen as a pleasant (wide) starter over Diagonal Gully.  The snow was a bit heavy, and we were certainly warmed up by the bottom of it.

Next up, Castlegates Gully.  The fresh snow had thankfully covered the boulders at the top, and after a snow stability check with the benefit of the rope, we were off.  It's fair to say that the lower section of the gully could be the best powder i've skied in Scotland.  We'd all have happily skied it again, but Chris suggested the chute that bounds the NW end of Garbh Uisge crag.  It was pretty damn fine as well.  The plan was then to head to Cairn Lochan, but as we got onto the summit area, it was whiteout time.  With no way of knowing how long it would be like this, and with daylight fading, we opted to head in the direction of Lurchers on a bearing.  We got some visibility about 60m down, so the skins came off.  As we shuffled across the flat section above the twin burns, it completely cleared.  However, the descent into Lurchers was superb, and we cruised back to the car park happy people.

The day started a bit murky, but we caught a glimpse of the sun here.
The gentle cruise down into Coire Raibert didn't involve much in the way of views.
Getting ready at the top of Y Gully.

Still in Y Gully. The snow showers were causing camera issues!

It was very, very nice to ski.
Chris leaving Castlegates Gully
Despite the boulders, we were able to ski all the way down.
Scott with his straight line start to the chute by Garbh Uisge Crag. He soon had a change of plan.
